I am blessed to have people (most particularly my spouse) which hold me accountable to who I claim to be and how I live my life. Honestly, this is a journey of constant correction. My compass points in a particular direction, but my feet often go astray.
In normal daily encounters, I strive to view each engagement as an investment in relational building. From a business perspective, it would be fantastic if it were based upon mutual benefit, and mutual gain. Unfortunately, this is not the paradigm of our capitalistic society.
What remains in the realm of ignorance is the benchmark of accountability. With no profession of who we are, or what we represent we are free to do what ever we please and make accommodations, or rationalize actions and behavior. Submitting to an external view, or feedback we are subject to negative criticism. Thus, it is easier to remain silent.
Well in support of a blogger friend, I wanted to resonate his challenge of Living Life with Passion, and introduce The Slice of Life.

The above pie chart is a simple illustration of a typical week (168 hours) and various slices based upon how people would generally say they carve their time. Just a couple of quick comments/questions.
How would you carve your pie?
Share your view with your spouse and ask their thoughts.
Exploring the quality of the time, how much time is spent in nurturing the relationship compared to addressing/avoiding friction?
What pieces are missing?
This all boils down to a fundamental question. Who are you, really?
What would people inside and outside of your sphere of influence say about you, and would they be right?

Isn't it amazing how we DO and yet we rarely TRACK. By looking at your pie chart and seeing what the average person takes time with, are we really making proper choices? Do we even care until we are forced to review it? The perception of the track we think we are on is not always the reality of our life. This is another great visual of looking for the missing pieces.
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion, without measurement we will surely rationalize the yes on proper choice selection. Unfortunately, one cannot legitimately put the toothpaste back in the tube of this rationalized gordian knot. We never perform 100% true to what we know is right. Hence, we are presented a choice. One of comfort, or one of challenge. I prefer the latter.
ReplyDeleteI'm printing out the "proposed pie" so I have somthing to refer to as I create my own pie. I think I need to heighten my awareness about how much time I really spend in each of those areas.
