As a standard course of business clients engage a broad range of consulting service providers. When dealing with the "hard" trades (Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil) specifications are developed based upon industry standards.
In the world of Audio/Visual services, while their remains a set of installation standards, material selection and specification is quite subjective.
It is not my intent to be driving a large mass transit vehicle over the AV Consultants. They are a valued component of the industry, and as with all industries you have good ones and bad ones.
We have seen our fair share of consultant specifications each reflecting their best interpretation of the clients needs. Represented to the client in a package of specifications, drawings, and bid documents.
Again, in my opinion, establishes a benchmark for the client to comparatively analyze prospective bidders from single framework.
Maybe its just me, but as it pertains to Digital Signage, this process woefully under serves the client. The discovery process for Digital Signage is much more extensive.
Plainly put, AV equipment is installed for its functional use designed for the lowest common denominator at the user level. I hate to say it, but it has been termed "set it and forget it" (something that we do not subscribe). On the DS side, the system requires a different skill set, with a high quantity of changes.
I am not certain that the consultants are aware that a DS implementation should incorporate a detailed exploration of the clients existing resources and talents. Determining if an inhouse or an external service partner should be presented.
